Earlier this week, Russell, founder of Lords, joined Phoenix Radio to talk about something that matters deeply to us as a family business. Giving back has always been part of who we are, and the conversation focused on our long standing support of SNAP Charity and the ways we continue to raise money year after year.

What started it all was a passion project. A silver, gold and diamond Mark II Escort model that showed us how jewellery and craftsmanship could be used to do something positive. From there, it grew into calendar sales and a number of other fundraising ventures, all with SNAP Charity at the heart of it. In the months ahead, that support continues, with Russell’s son in law stepping into the boxing ring, where every penny raised on the night will again go straight to the charity.

During the interview, Russell also shared a little about life as a jeweller, why helping people and making them happy is at the centre of what we do, and how proud we are to use our work for good. I was asked what job I dislike the most, and the truth is I don’t actually hate any part of what I do. But if I had to choose, it would be making jump rings. They are the small rings used at the end of chains to fasten onto a bolt ring or lobster catch, and they are also used to attach chains to the collet that holds a stone or a piece of metalwork in place. They look simple, but they play a crucial role in how a piece of jewellery functions and lasts.

The process is slow and repetitive. I start by pulling wire plate down to the exact diameter needed, in this case under half a millimetre. That wire is then formed into a tight coil before being cut, one by one, into individual rings. Each ring needs to be consistent, round, and strong enough to do its job properly. There is no shortcut if you want them done well.

This is the side of jewellery making most people never see. The small components that take time, patience, and care, but make all the difference to the finished piece. We’re walking you through the process of creating a bespoke emerald cut double halo diamond pendant for a client now living in Dubai, UAE. The centre diamond, no longer worn, and rather than letting it sit unused we are giving it a new purpose. This is one of the things we love most about our work, taking something meaningful and transforming it into a piece that fits your life today.

We’re walking you through the process of creating a bespoke emerald cut double halo diamond pendant for a client now living in Dubai, UAE. The centre diamond, no longer worn, and rather than letting it sit unused we are giving it a new purpose. This is one of the things we love most about our work, taking something meaningful and transforming it into a piece that fits your life today. Michelle came in to collect her son’s engagement ring, which we had made previously and were engraving while she was with us.
While she waited, she started looking at eternity rings and comparing a style she’d seen elsewhere with smaller stones against one of ours with larger diamonds.

Rather than rushing the decision, I suggested she pop out for 30–40 minutes, grab some breakfast and have a think.

Bringing a 1920s handmade treasure back to life is the kind of work that reminds us why we do what we do. This ring belonged to our client’s mother and arrived with serious damage after a lifetime of wear. A piece with this much history deserves to be saved, not replaced, so we carefully lifted the collapsed gallery, rebuilt the under-structure strong, restored its original lines, and returned its character without losing its story.

Seeing it transform from fragile to solid again was a real moment of ring-demption, and watching our client’s reaction when they collected it made every hour worth it. Beautiful jewellery deserves a beautiful second chapter, and this one is now ready for many more years of memories.

1. Some jewellers make engagement rings that look pretty but won’t last. Bands are often made too thin, stones poorly supported, and the piece simply isn’t built for real life. We never make a ring slimmer than 1.8 mm because durability comes first.

2. Many rings aren’t wedding-ring friendly. If the collet sits too low or flares out, the wedding band won’t sit flush. We build our settings at the right height so both rings fit together perfectly.

3. Diamond certificates help, but they’re not the whole story. Tiny grading differences can raise the price without changing what you actually see. Choose with your eyes, not just paperwork.

4. Re-tipping claws rarely lasts. It’s a short-term fix on a stressed area, leaving a weak joint. Often a new, properly built ring is the smarter long-term option.
